Section Properties: Centroid and Moment of Inertia Formulas
Area, centroid and second moment of area (moment of inertia) formulas for 27 cross sections, from basic shapes to structural steel profiles. The moment of inertia about the centroidal axes is what you need for bending stresses and deflections.

Notation and axes
Notation and axes
The origin is the bottom-left corner of the bounding box. x̄ and ȳ locate the centroid; Ī_x and Ī_y are the moments of inertia about the centroidal axes; I_x and I_y are taken about the base and the left edge, related by the parallel axis theorem.
Where these properties are used
Bending stress σ = M·y/Ī, deflection of beams (EI), buckling of columns (radius of gyration r = √(Ī/A)) and the plastic capacity of steel sections (Z).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the moment of inertia of a rectangle?
About its centroidal horizontal axis, a rectangle of base b and height h has Ī_x = bh³/12. About its base it is I_x = bh³/3, which is the centroidal value plus A·(h/2)² by the parallel axis theorem.
What is the moment of inertia of a circle?
A solid circle of radius r has Ī = πr⁴/4 about any centroidal axis. A hollow circle with outer radius R and inner radius r has Ī = π(R⁴ − r⁴)/4.
Where is the centroid of a triangle or a trapezoid?
The centroid of a triangle is at one third of its height from the base. For a trapezoid with parallel sides a (top) and b (bottom) and height h, it is at ȳ = h(2a + b)/(3(a + b)) from the base.
How do I combine several shapes?
Add the areas, find the combined centroid as the area-weighted average of the individual centroids, and add each moment of inertia moved to the combined centroid with the parallel axis theorem: I = Ī + A·d².
